Key Takeaways
  • Taco Bell visits fell 10.1% YoY in Q3 2026 in the wake of the cyclospora outbreak, trailing the wider QSR category.
  • By early October, Taco Bell’s weekly visit gap had shrunk to 1.9% year over year, putting it back ahead of QSR.

A Tough Market Gets Tougher

Yum! Brands entered Q3 2026 ahead of the quick-service restaurant (QSR) category, with growth engine Taco Bell posting 7% U.S. same-store sales growth in Q2. Then a multistate cyclospora outbreak tied to lettuce served at the chain hit during a prolonged fast-food slowdown, making Q3 the portfolio's toughest quarter of 2026 so far.

A Food Safety Shock Meets a Soft Category

QSR visits fell 3.1% year over year (YoY) in Q3 2026 – and for a change, Taco Bell underperformed the category benchmark. Visits to the chain tumbled 10.1% YoY following a July 16 federal health advisory linking a multistate cyclospora outbreak to shredded iceberg lettuce served at its restaurants.

KFC also faced a difficult quarter, amid broader QSR headwinds that pushed category traffic below year-earlier levels for the seventh straight month in September. But same-store visits held up better than overall traffic as the chain continued closing underperforming locations as part of its turnaround efforts. Looking ahead, KFC is betting that a refreshed offering – including a new tenders-and-sauces menu inspired by its Saucy concept, an Open House prototype testing breakfast and a dedicated beverage line, and a switch to Coca-Cola beginning in January 2027 – can help win diners back.

Meanwhile, fast-casual The Habit Burger Grill held steady, with overall visits increasing as the chain added locations and same-store traffic remaining just below year-earlier levels. (Pizza Hut was sold to LongRange Capital on September 1st).

Taco Bell Bounces Back

Fortunately for YUM!, however, Taco Bell's setback appears to have been temporary. Weekly visit trends show the chain bouncing back quickly, a sign of the brand’s resilience.

In the weeks immediately following the outbreak, visits to Taco Bell fell roughly 21% below 2025 levels. But the gap narrowed steadily through August and September, and by late September, the chain's YoY performance was essentially in line with the broader QSR segment. By the week of October 5th, Taco Bell's YoY visit gap had shrunk to just 1.9% – putting it back ahead of the wider category, as it had been in early July.

A Leaner Yum! Heads Into Q4

Q3 presented Yum! Brands with two distinct challenges: a sudden food safety shock at Taco Bell and persistent category headwinds complicating KFC's turnaround. But Taco Bell's rapid recovery offers reason for optimism, while KFC's ongoing efforts to streamline its footprint and refresh its menu could help strengthen its position over time.
