A look at the overall state of brick-and-mortar retail this year offers a glimpse into what we can expect this holiday season.
Since January 2024, monthly retail foot traffic has generally been on an upswing, with YoY visits up most months since January 2024 – and foot traffic higher than in 2022 or 2019 (pre-pandemic). This steady rise in retail visits signals strong consumer engagement in 2024, setting the stage for what may turn out to be a robust Q4.

2024’s Special Calendar Day Pull
Holiday promotions are kicking off early this year, offering customers more time to take advantage of deals and helping retailers navigate supply chain and logistics challenges. And though early sales are nothing new, 2024’s shorter holiday shopping season may suffuse them with more significance than ever.
In 2023, Thanksgiving fell on November 23rd, leaving consumers with 32 days in which to do their holiday shopping. But this year, the holiday will be on November 28th, shortening the period between Thanksgiving and Christmas by five days. To make up for lost time, retailers and consumers alike may embrace an early shopping frenzy, potentially detracting from the power of milestones like Black Friday, Super Saturday, and Christmas Eve Eve.
But a look at consumer behavior during special calendar days this year suggests that traditional retail milestones still very much resonate with customers. On Mother’s Day, Memorial Day, and Labor Day, key industries saw YoY visit boosts, though the magnitude of the increases varied across categories.
On Mother’s Day, for example, the beauty and wellness sector saw a 3.2% YoY increase in visits – highlighting the category’s enduring popularity for grateful offspring seeking to give mom a special gift. But on Memorial Day, department stores had their time in the sun, overshadowing other segments with a 7.2% YoY visit boost.

Another standout during the holiday season is the hobbies, gifts, and crafts category. Unlike department stores, this category sees a more evenly-distributed rise in foot traffic across Q4, with peaks leading up to Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas. This pattern reflects the popularity of holiday-related decorations and gifts, which drive increased visits during these festive periods.

Costco’s wholesale club model seems like it was tailor made for the 2024 consumer. Though prices aren’t rising as rapidly as they did last year, consumers remain eager to cut costs, embracing retailers that allow them to load up on essentials while indulging in affordable splurges that don’t break the bank. And Costco, which provides customers with steep discounts on everything from bulk cereals to patio furniture, is reaping the benefits.
Since January 2024, Costco has enjoyed consistently positive year-over-year (YoY) foot traffic growth, outpacing the wider Superstore and Wholesale Club category every month of 2024 so far. Even in January, when retail visits nationwide were severely dampened by unusually cold and stormy weather, Costco saw YoY visits increase by 5.2% – a remarkable accomplishment.
Mission-Driven Treasure Hunting
Why is Costco resonating so strongly with consumers this year? One factor may be the unique blend of mission-driven shopping and treasure hunting offered by the membership club. Costco is all about bulk buying – and when people head out to the wholesaler, they expect to come back with a massive haul of canned goods and pantry staples. But with oft-changing inventory and ubiquitous free samples, Costco also offers a fun shopping experience that encourages customers to try new items and make unexpected purchases as they cruise the aisles.
So it may come as no surprise that people spend much longer browsing the aisles at Costco than they do at other superstores and wholesale clubs. And while competitors like Target, Walmart, and BJ’s Wholesale have seen slight drops in their average dwell times over the past three years, Costco’s average dwell time has remained considerably longer – and remarkably steady.
Post-Labor Day Grand Slam
Costco also drives visits by leaning into special calendar days. Unlike some other retailers, Costco closes its doors on most major holidays, including Memorial Day and Labor Day. But the chain still offers major discounts on the days leading up to and following these special days, driving heightened interest – and foot traffic.
Comparing visits on Tuesday, September 3rd – the day after Labor Day – to a year-to-date (YTD) daily average highlights the power of holiday sales, as well as pent-up demand following the store’s closure, to drive traffic to Costco. September 3rd was Costco’s second-busiest Tuesday of the year so far (up 23.8% compared to a YTD Tuesday average) – outpaced only by the pre-Independence Day July 2nd frenzy. May 28th, the day after Memorial Day, was also unusually busy at Costco, as customers rushed to take advantage of Memorial Day markdowns that lasted well into the following week.
In another sign of Costco’s robust positioning ahead of the all-important Black Friday and Christmas shopping season, visits to Costco on the Tuesday after Labor Day this year (Tuesday, September 3rd, 2024) were 6.1% higher this year than in 2023 (Tuesday, September 5th, 2023).

Moderate Visit Increases
Summer is underway, and malls are still bustling. In July 2024, visits to indoor malls and open-air shopping centers were up 2.5% and 2.4%, respectively, compared to the equivalent period of 2023. Though these year-over-year (YoY) increases were more moderate than the significant jumps observed in May and June, they underscore the segment’s continued solid positioning. Outlet malls, for their parts, saw a slight 0.4% decline in mall visits compared to July 2023.
At first glance, July’s softer numbers – particularly for outlet malls – may appear to herald the start of a retail and mall visit summer slow-down. But zooming into weekly visit data offers further context that can shed light on what may lie ahead in the coming months.
End of July Brings Back-To-School Shopping Momentum
Analyzing week-over-week (WoW) visit trends shows that during the last two weeks of June and the first two weeks of July, all three mall indexes saw visits either decline or hold steady from week to week. The one notable exception was outlet malls – which experienced an impressive and sudden 13.7% WoW surge in visits to outlet malls during the first week of July, driven by the segment's exceptional Independence Day draw. Outlet malls’ subsequent WoW visit drop also reflects this exceptional Fourth of July peak.
The final two weeks of July showed a change in visit trajectory, with all three mall segments experiencing growing WoW visit gains as traffic picked up towards the end of the month. This upward trend can likely be attributed to the back-to-school season getting into full swing, with sales typically running from mid to late July through August and into mid-September.
Here too, the late July WoW visit gains were strongest for outlet malls – perhaps showcasing consumers' prioritization of budget shopping ahead of the new school year.
Outlet Malls are Fourth of July Hotspots
The Placer.ai Mall Index has frequently highlighted the power of special calendar milestones to drive significant shopping center visit spikes. And Independence Day is no exception.
On July 4th, shoppers nationwide flock to stores for holiday deals, often after enjoying hotdogs, hamburgers, and other festive treats. But though all three mall types have shops that are open on the holiday, it is outlet malls that really draw the crowds. On July 4th, 2024, visits to outlet malls shot up 50.7% compared to an average YTD Thursday. Foot traffic to indoor malls and open-air shopping centers, on the other hand, remained below levels usually seen on Thursdays.
Between Fourth of July sales and a long, summer holiday weekend, many consumers chose to spend their time off this year driving out to outlet malls and browsing their offerings to find the best deals.

Weekly Mall Visits Peak with Summer Heat
Fresh on the heels of May’s strong showing, malls continued to impress in June 2024. Weekly year-over-year (YoY) visits to all three mall types (indoor malls, open-air shopping centers, and outlet malls) remained robust throughout the month, as shoppers took advantage of the warm weather to go shopping.
YoY foot traffic to malls was especially high during the week of June 17th – when a record-breaking heat wave likely drove shoppers to seek refuge in air-conditioned spaces – including both malls and individual stores. During that week, indoor malls, open-air shopping centers, and outlet malls saw YoY visit increases of 9.4%, 9.9%, and 4.5%, respectively.

Outlet Malls are on the Brink of Their Seasonal Peak
Malls’ positive June performance appears to herald a strong summer shopping season for the sector – which tends to draw larger crowds in summer months.
Comparing monthly mall visits to a January 2019 baseline shows that all three mall types experience substantial summer foot traffic boosts. For indoor malls and open-air shopping centers, the summer foot traffic increases – though significant – pale in comparison to those of the holiday season. But for outlet malls, the July and August foot traffic spikes rival those seen in December.
Outlet malls’ special summertime opportunity may be driven by a variety of factors. People may have more time to travel to outlet malls during summer vacations and may be more inclined to embrace the experience of a leisurely shopping day trip when the weather is warm. College students and parents eager to find back-to-school deals may also flock to outlet malls in July and August as they gear up for the academic year.
And with such a strong June under their belts, outlet malls – as well as indoor malls and open-air shopping centers – appear poised for a successful summer indeed.

Mall Visits Grow Longer as Shoppers Escape the Heat
The warm summer months not only bring more shoppers to malls, but also lead to longer visits. Analyzing monthly shifts in malls’ average visit durations since May 2023 shows that like foot traffic, mall dwell time also has a seasonal element – with people staying longer during holiday shopping seasons, as well as in the summer. Visit durations peak in July, and then again in November and December – with smaller jumps seen in March, likely a result of Easter and Spring Break.
And looking more closely at dwell time trends over the past six months shows that since the beginning of 2024, mall visit length increased slightly each month for all three mall types. June 2024 average visit durations to indoor malls, open-air shopping centers, and outlet malls were 1.9, 1.3, and 3.1 minutes longer, respectively, than in January 2024. While these differences are subtle, the consistency of the shift is striking – and considering that the averages are derived from millions of visits to hundreds of malls, it reflects a significant trend.

As the temperatures warm up, shoppers are happy to hit the mall. All three mall types saw a strong June, indicating a promising summer ahead.

This uptick is likely due to a variety of factors – from warmer weather to rising consumer confidence amidst slowly easing inflation. And malls’ particularly strong showing on two of May’s most important retail milestones – Mother’s day and Memorial day also helped propel the segment forward.
Category Strength Boosted and Showcased by Holiday Visit Spikes
Taking a closer look at visit patterns to the three mall types on Mother’s Day and Memorial Day shows how significant these special days were for mall foot traffic. On Mother’s Day (May 12th), indoor malls, open-air shopping centers, and outlet malls saw respective visit spikes of 15.8%, 26.0%, and 11.4%, compared to an average year-to-date (YTD) Sunday. And Mother’s Day visits were up significantly YoY as well – further highlighting the category’s robust positioning.
All three mall types also saw impressive visit bumps on Memorial Day – this time compared to an average YTD Monday. The relative spikes were bigger across the board, since malls tend to be less busy on Mondays than on Sundays. But for outlet malls, Memorial Day visits really hit it out of the park – with foot traffic up by a whopping 123.3%. As a day off work featuring plenty of markdowns, Memorial Day is an ideal time to make the longer trip to an outlet mall and hunt for bargains.
And in another promising sign for the category, Memorial Day visits to all three mall types increased YoY – showing that despite continued headwinds, malls are still on the rise.
Which Mall Kings Rule Special Calendar Days?
Comparing weekly mall visits to an early January baseline also shows the varying impact of different holidays on the three mall types.
On Easter, and even more so on Memorial Day – an extended weekend very much focused on savings – outlet malls won the day. On these holidays, shoppers may be more likely to have the time and state of mind to make a day of their shopping trip and lean into the treasure-hunting experience.
But on Mother’s Day, more upscale open-air shopping centers took the lead, as consumers embraced a more unique and luxurious shopping experience. Still, all three mall types drew increased traffic on the different special days – showing that each can benefit from a variety of calendar highlights.

Malls’ strong May performance – especially on the holidays – shows that shopping centers are on the upswing once again. This could be an encouraging sign for the category heading into the summer, and may hint at a promising shopping season during the warm months ahead.

April Foot Traffic Trends: A Mall Visit Slowdown
In April 2024, YoY mall visits slowed following two months of positive visit growth. For Indoor Malls, the decline was marginal – and Open-Air Shopping Centers saw visits remain on par with last year’s levels. But Outlet Malls saw a significant drop of 6.5% in visits.
Although at first glance this slowdown may suggest a resurgence of the retail challenges that plagued much of 2022 and 2023, a deeper dive into weekly visit trends paints a much rosier picture.

April Weekly Visits Show: Mall Foot Traffic Remains Strong
Indoor Malls and Open-Air Shopping Centers experienced robust YoY visit increases every week of April 2024 and into May, with the sole exception of the week of April 8th. This isolated drop appears to be due to a calendar discrepancy: In 2023, Easter fell on April 9th, while in 2024, the holiday fell on March 31st. So the week of April 8th, 2024 is being compared to the week immediately after the holiday (including Easter Monday) when malls likely experienced heightened activity due to gift returns and pent-up demand following holiday store closures. Though Easter Monday isn’t an official holiday in the U.S., many people likely take the day off – giving them more time to hit the stores.
Outlet Malls, which saw a steeper decline during the week of April 8th, appear to have been particularly impacted by the Easter calendar difference – shoppers may be especially likely to make the trek to an outlet mall on a holiday weekend, or on Easter Monday. But Outlet Malls also saw their positive momentum quickly recover.
The continued rise in weekly YoY mall visits signals continued retail strength into the spring of 2024.

Post-Easter Monday Visits Peak
Holiday retail foot traffic is typically characterized by two main spikes: a pre-holiday visit spike evident in the days preceding the holiday, and a post-holiday uptick driven largely by gift returns and pent-up demand after stores reopen. The Monday after Easter follows this pattern – and comparing this year’s post-Easter visit spike to the one observed in 2023 provides further evidence of the category’s resilience.
On Monday, April 1st, 2024 – the day after Easter – Indoor Malls, Open-Air Shopping Centers, and Outlet Malls all drew significantly more visits than on an average Monday. And this year’s post-Easter visit spikes – ranging from 22.5% to 27.8% – were even more impressive than last year’s. Outlet Malls, which may be more likely to draw visitors on the day after Easter, saw the biggest post-Easter visit spikes.
All three mall types also saw more absolute visits this year on the day after Easter than they did in 2023 – with April 1st, 2024 foot traffic to Indoor Malls, Open-Air Shopping Centers, and Outlet Malls up 8.7%, 12.3%, and 6.7%, respectively, compared to April 10th, 2023.

Looking Ahead
Weekly YoY visit data and post-Easter foot traffic trends show that malls remain on an upward trajectory. As inflation continues to ease, malls may regain some leverage and can potentially attract crowds more readily than they did in 2023.
