Despite the ongoing consumer headwinds, the 2025 holiday shopping season delivered year-over-year (YoY) gains for both retail and dining chains nationwide, with the majority of states registering retail and dining traffic increases during the holiday window. And while performance varied meaningfully by category and format, aggregate retail traffic numbers point to significant consumer engagement throughout the end of 2025.

Bifurcation Defined Holiday Apparel Performance

Bifurcation has been a defining trend of consumer behavior in 2025 and continued to shape shopping patterns during the holiday season. Thrift stores and off-price retailers led the apparel category with traffic up 11.7% and 6.6% (November 1st to December 24th, 2025), respectively, compared to last year’s holiday period. Luxury chains and department stores also posted modest gains (+1.8%), while traditional apparel chains saw slight declines (-1.8%) and mid-tier department stores experienced more pronounced traffic drops (-6.2%).

Experience-Forward Open-Air Centers Outperformed Other Mall Formats 

Open-air shopping centers led mall-format performance during the 2025 holiday season, with visits up 1.7% YoY, as consumers gravitated toward environments that offered a more festive, experiential atmosphere and a wider mix of dining options. The format likely received an additional lift from warmer-than-average weather across much of the country, which encouraged shoppers to fully take advantage of the outdoor amenities and social experiences open-air centers offer during the holidays. 

Indoor mall traffic was largely flat (+0.8%) – a positive signal given ongoing consumer headwinds, especially for mid-tier formats – suggesting that traditional malls were able to maintain relevance during a pressured spending environment. 

Meanwhile, outlet mall visits declined slightly (-0.8%), likely reflecting reduced appetite for destination-driven, discretionary trips as shoppers prioritized convenience, everyday value, and locally accessible retail over longer, deal-oriented excursions during the holidays.

Value – Beyond Just Low Prices – Won in the Superstore Space

Within the superstore category, wholesale clubs and discount & dollar stores outperformed mass merchants. This performance underscores consumers’ continued shift toward value-driven retail during the holidays and highlights that “value” extends beyond low prices alone; wholesale clubs, with their compelling value propositions, are also seeing meaningful gains in the current consumer environment.

Self-Gifting Categories Outpaced Traditional Holiday Segments

Categories most closely tied to self-gifting outperformed more traditional holiday segments during the 2025 season. Pet stores and services (+5.5% YoY) and home improvement retailers (+3.4% YoY) led the way, perhaps because purchases from these categories are typically positioned as practical investments in everyday life, ranging from caring for pets to improving and maintaining living spaces. 

In contrast, home furnishings (-0.8%) lagged, as these purchases tend to be more decorative or occasion-driven and therefore more likely to be intended as gifts for others rather than immediate, utility-focused upgrades. Traffic to electronics stores also dipped slightly (-1.5%). Together, these trends underscore a consumer preference for spending that delivers direct, everyday value to themselves over more traditional, outward-facing holiday gifting.

What the 2025 Holiday Season Reveals About the 2026 Consumer Mindset

Overall, location analytics for the 2025 holiday season suggest that consumers remained highly engaged despite ongoing economic pressure, but their spending behavior continued to fragment. Across apparel, superstores, and discretionary categories, shoppers consistently gravitated toward retailers that delivered clear value – whether through low prices, strong quality-to-price ratios, or products tied to personal utility and well-being. The outperformance of thrift, off-price, wholesale clubs, and self-gifting categories underscores a consumer mindset that is both pragmatic and selective, balancing budget consciousness with targeted willingness to spend.

Looking ahead to 2026, these patterns suggest that retailers should move beyond one-dimensional value messaging and instead sharpen their core propositions. Formats that clearly articulate why they are “worth the trip” – through pricing power, assortment differentiation, or alignment with everyday consumer priorities – will be best positioned to win share. Balancing Rapid Growth with Store Maturity

Dutch Bros is still on an aggressive growth trajectory, with plans to continue opening new locations at a brisk pace. The company passed the 1,000-unit mark this year and aims to reach over 2,000 locations nationwide by 2029. However, recent data suggests that while the brand's overall footprint is expanding, its established locations are facing the typical challenges of a maturing brand.

Throughout much of 2025, total visits to Dutch Bros increased rapidly year-over-year (YoY), driven largely by new store openings. And while same-store visits – which measure the performance of locations open for at least a year – were also generally positive, the growth was somewhat uneven. So although the brand’s expansion is still meeting robust demand, the gap between total growth and same-store performance may indicate that Dutch Bros is reaching a level of saturation in its initial markets.

To sustain growth, the brand is targeting the morning daypart by introducing breakfast offerings, reaching approximately 160 stores by the end of September 2025 and plans to deploy the menu across its store fleet in 2026. This strategy appears to be paying off: November saw same-store visits surge to their highest levels of the year. While this spike was likely supported by holiday menu launches and Black Friday, it also suggests the breakfast initiative is gaining traction and successfully revitalizing performance at established locations.

Closing the Breakfast Gap

Why is Dutch Bros betting on breakfast? Historically, Dutch Bros has seen a lower percentage of its daily traffic occur during the morning daypart than its competitors. And when comparing the chain’s hourly visit distribution to the wider coffee category, it becomes clear why the shift toward a more robust breakfast offering is a logical move for Dutch Bros. While the coffee category as a whole sees 43.1% of its total daily visits between 5:00 and 11:00 AM, Dutch Bros captures only 32.6% during that same window, according to the chart below.

To bridge this gap, Dutch Bros is evolving its menu to include more substantial food options. Food currently accounts for only about 2% of Dutch Bros’ total sales, a figure it hopes to increase significantly with the help of hot breakfast items. As Dutch Bros continues to roll out the expanded food lineup to more locations in 2026, the brand is positioning itself to compete directly for the morning commuter who currently heads to a competitor for a meal-and-drink combo. 

And to further bolster its morning performance, Dutch Bros could lean into "functional fuel" trends that complement its popular protein coffee and are likely to appeal in particular to younger consumers who prioritize health-conscious menu options. 

More Fuel for the Future

Dutch Bros is at a pivotal point in its evolution. While new store openings continue to drive visits, the brand is now focusing on deepening its relationship with customers through the breakfast daypart. If the recent uptick in same-store visits is any indication, the shift from a "beverage-first" destination to a well-rounded morning stop could be exactly what the company needs to sustain its long-term momentum.

Seasonal Peaks Meet a More Value-Conscious Consumer

The last full week before Christmas (December 15th to 21st) saw massive seasonal spikes in traffic across the board, underscoring the continued importance of physical retail during the holiday season. But while visits rose broadly compared to the year-to-date (YTD) average, year-over-year comparisons tell a more nuanced story, with many traditional gifting categories experiencing modest declines relative to 2024.

Part of this softness likely reflects the calendar shift. Super Saturday fell on December 20th in 2025 but on December 21st in 2024, so 2025 holiday shoppers enjoyed an extra day between Super Saturday and Christmas to complete last-minute purchases. Yet a deeper look at the data suggests that timing alone does not tell the full story. Value-oriented retailers – including dollar stores, thrift stores, and off-price chains – saw traffic remain flat or even increase year over year (YoY) despite the same calendar shift. 

So consumers are still spending, but they are trading down, actively seeking deals, and gravitating toward “treasure hunt” retail experiences rather than traditional discretionary splurges. 

The Flight to Value: Discount & Dollar Stores Win the Week

In a season defined by economic prudence, the most immediate winners were the retailers promising the most bang for the buck. Discount & Dollar Stores – not a traditional holiday category – saw a healthy seasonal uplift of 37.3% compared to their weekly average as well as a 3.8% traffic increase compared to 2024. In contrast, Superstores saw smaller spikes compared to the YTD average and YoY visits dips of 4.6%. 

The outperformance of dollar stores suggests that shoppers were making targeted, smaller-basket trips for affordable essentials and stocking stuffers rather than relying solely on the "one-stop-shop" giants. 

Softer Year for Traditional Gifting

The "traditional" holiday categories, including apparel and electronic stores, experienced their expected massive seasonal "pop," but – like superstores – struggled to match the highs of 2024. 

And while some of the decline can be explained by the calendar shift, the double-digit YoY drop in traffic to key holiday categories such as department stores suggests that timing alone does not account for the slowdown. Instead, the data indicates that consumers are still showing up to buy gifts, but are purchasing fewer items or choosing lower-priced alternatives – forcing traditional discretionary retailers to compete more aggressively for a shrinking share of wallet.

Malls At the Center of the Season

Malls showed a similar pattern, with strong seasonal traffic surges alongside YoY declines – although these YoY gaps were far smaller than in other discretionary categories. This resilience suggests that, despite headwinds facing individual retailers, the mall itself remains the central hub of the holiday shopping experience.

The "Treasure Hunt" Advantage

The off-price sector delivered one of the strongest signals this season, posting sharp seasonal traffic surges alongside modest YoY gains despite unfavorable calendar shifts. Thrift stores also stood out, recording a notable YoY increase in visits even as traffic came in slightly below the category’s YTD weekly average – likely reflecting the category’s year-round strength and its relatively recent emergence as a holiday shopping destination.

This data underscores the outsized role of value perception in shaping holiday shopping behavior and highlights the growing appeal of the “thrill of the find.” Whether hunting for a designer deal or uncovering a one-of-a-kind vintage piece, consumers increasingly favored discovery-driven experiences over the standardized assortments of traditional retail.

Lessons from the 2025 Holiday Season

For retailers looking ahead to 2026, the lessons of this holiday season are stark. First, value is non-negotiable – consumers are actively migrating to formats that offer perceived savings. Second, the mall is not dead, but it is evolving. The format remains a critical seasonal traffic driver, but it must compete harder on convenience and experience. Finally, the success of the off-price and thrift sectors suggests that inventory freshness and the "treasure hunt" dynamic are powerful tools to combat consumer fatigue. As we close the books on 2025, it’s clear that while the consumer is still shopping, they are doing so with a sharper, more critical eye.

Black Friday has long served as a reliable anchor in the retail calendar. But some retailers place less weight on the post-Thanksgiving rush – or even opt out of it altogether – in favor of promotional windows that better align with their customers or brand values. 

We analyzed foot traffic patterns at two such retailers, REI and IKEA, to see how alternative promotional strategies can shape visit performance throughout the year.

REI Bows Out for the Outdoors

Mission-driven REI’s decision to close on Black Friday is a deliberate break from retail tradition. The brand’s long-running #OptOutside initiative reflects its commitment to outdoor activity and to the well-being of its employees, who get the day off to spend with friends and family. 

The graph below highlights the foot traffic impact of the decision: while the traditional apparel and recreational & sporting goods categories experienced a sharp surge during the week of Black Friday, REI’s visits dropped below its 2025 YTD average. 

Even so, the data indicates that REI still captures seasonal momentum. The retailer’s pre-Thanksgiving Holiday Sale delivered a modest visit lift that partially offset its voluntary pause on one of the category’s highest-traffic days. And REI’s post-Black Friday sales – Cyber Monday and last-minute gifts sale – appeared to do some heavy lifting for the brand, while the anticipated end-of-year sale is likely to provide an additional foot traffic boost as shoppers gear up for winter activities.

And beyond the holidays, REI follows a distinct promotional rhythm of its own, leaning into moments – like the start of summer – that reflect the seasonal outdoor needs of its customers. The retailer’s annual Anniversary Sale in May delivered the largest weekly visit spike of 2025, with demand for warm-weather gear sustaining elevated traffic in the weeks that followed. And unlike traditional apparel and recreational and sporting goods retailers, which saw a pronounced back-to-school visit surge in early August, the brand saw a smaller bump during its end-of-summer Labor Day sale.

IKEA Knows Summer is Coming 

REI’s alternative holiday cadence sets up an interesting comparison with other retailers – like IKEA – that hold Black Friday sales events but rely less heavily on the milestone than their wider category. 

As shown in the graph below, the furniture and home furnishings segment received its largest visit boost of the year in the weeks leading up to and including Black Friday, as consumers likely took advantage of big sales events to spruce up their spaces in anticipation of hosting family and friends for the holidays. IKEA, however, saw just a modest November lift, with weekly visits remaining below the chain’s year-to-date average. 

Instead, IKEA anchors its promotional calendar around several event-driven periods throughout the year – most notably its summer sale window from June through August, when the brand capitalizes on home furnishing demand during the peak moving season. Other events, such as IKEA’s winter clearance sale from December 2024 through early January 2025 helped stabilize post-holiday traffic at a moment when category visits softened.

Standing By Their Identity

REI and IKEA’s visit trends underscore the value of a promotional calendar built around brand alignment rather than conventional retail expectations. Neither retailer maximizes Black Friday in the way their respective categories do, yet both demonstrate how targeted seasonal events can cultivate consistent demand outside of traditional peak periods.

Salt Lake City, UT – Strong Home-Focused Demand

Utah is one of the fastest-growing states in the U.S. The state’s population has grown steadily for more than two decades with unemployment remaining consistently below the nationwide average, with one of the youngest workforces in the country. According to some analysts, the median household income in Utah, when adjusted for cost of living, is the highest in the nation. 

Foot Traffic on the Rise Across Salt Lake City Neighborhoods

All of this positions Salt Lake City – the state’s capital – as a particularly attractive market heading into 2026. Location analytics show year-over-year increases in foot traffic across many neighborhoods, from established retail hubs like Sugar House and Downtown SLC to the more mixed-use Central City and primarily residential areas such as The Avenues and East Bench. The city also serves as a gateway to a diverse mix of audiences, attracting younger residents and commuters as well as affluent families who come into the city to shop, dine, and enjoy local attractions.

Home-Centric Retail Outperforms in Salt Lake City 

Salt Lake City’s diversity in age and household composition as well as Utah's strong homeownership culture – even among younger cohorts – creates opportunities for retail and dining chains across categories. Home-forward concepts are particularly poised to outperform, as shown by recent location analytics. Traffic to furniture & home furnishing chains increased 7.4% YoY in the Salt Lake City DMA compared to a 2.5% increase nationwide, and grocery stores and home improvement retailers outperformed in the market as well. These trends point to a solid market for retailers tied to home life – from furniture and décor to everyday grocery needs –driven not only by steady population growth and household spending, but also by a local culture that places strong emphasis on family and the home.

Reno, NV – Attracting a New Generation of Visitors

While Salt Lake City continues to build on its strong foundation, another Western city is quietly gaining momentum. Reno, Nevada, which is often viewed as a regional gaming-town, is increasingly emerging as a dynamic travel destination in its own right. 

In 2024 Washoe County (including the city of Reno) welcomed approximately 3.8 million visitors whose spending of about $3.4 billion generated a total economic impact of $5.2 billion. This growth signals a robust visitor-economy that supports roughly 43,800 jobs and generates over $420 million in state and local tax revenue. 

Drive-Market Advantage and Cost Resilience

What makes this particularly compelling is that while Las Vegas, Nevada is facing mounting pressures from increasing costs, the Reno-Tahoe region is showing stronger resilience thanks in part to a drive-market model and diversified appeal. Analyzing the traffic data shows that visits from non-residents, and non-employees to downtown Reno have increased YoY for the past three years. And though Reno may be thought of as a vacation spot for older Gen X and Baby Boomer vacationers, the data also indicates that Singles & Starters –"young singles starting out and some starter families living a city lifestyle" – make up an increasingly large share of Reno's visitor base. 

Younger Demographics Fuel Consumer Growth 

This generational diversification carries important implications for both retail and real estate investment. As younger visitors drive up spending in food, entertainment, and shopping centers, the market is poised for renewed urban energy – fueling redevelopment across downtown corridors and mixed-use projects. With strategic public–private investments and an expanding visitor economy, Reno stands out as a market to watch in 2026, combining strong fundamentals with emerging demographic momentum.

Indianapolis, IN – Family-Friendly Affordability

The Midwest also contains several metro areas on the rise. Large-scale manufacturing projects like Intel’s $20 billion chip plants and Honda and LG Energy Solution’s EV battery facility are spurring housing and retail expansion around Columbus, Ohio. Kansas City, Missouri, is benefiting from logistics growth and projected tourism growth linked to its role as a FIFA World Cup 2026 host city. And Madison, Wisconsin, is seeing steady consumer growth is supported by its diverse tech and biotech economy. 

Suburban Families Lead the Charge in Indianapolis

But Indianapolis, Indiana tops the charts in terms of YoY overall retail visit growth between May and October 2025 (+4.3%, see first chart). And much of the consumer traffic in the Indianapolis DMA consists of suburban and rural households – precisely the segments that many retailers are now  trying to woo. 

Cost-of-Living Advantage Boosts Discretionary Spending

Family-friendly retailers and dining chains are particularly well positioned to thrive in Indiana heading into 2026. Indianapolis has some of the best job prospects and most affordable home prices in the country – and its favorable salary to cost of living ratio likely allows many families to have leftover income left over for discretionary spending. 

Recent data shows that a range of family-oriented brands – from Chili’s and Marshall’s to Kroger – have outperformed in Indianapolis over the past six months. The city’s growing middle-income population and its suburban, family-focused consumer base appear to be fueling stronger in-person spending, particularly at convenient, affordable, and community-oriented retail and dining destinations.

Raleigh, NC – High-Income Consumers Fueling Mixed-Use Traffic

Expansion in college-anchored markets, paired with celebrity and influencer-driven pop-ups, is helping retailers build cultural relevance and increase engagement with this emerging consumer base.

College Town Expansions Attract Gen Z Audiences

The graph below underscores how targeted expansion into college-anchored markets can meaningfully shift audience composition. Over the last several years, many brands have expanded their near-campus footprints – and in turn, attracted a higher share of the Spatial.ai:PersonaLive “Young Urban Singles” segment, one highly aligned with Gen Z consumers.

CAVA’s rapid unit growth, including openings near major universities and in college towns, helped the brand increase its share of “Young Urban Singles” within its captured trade areas between October 2018-September 2019 and October 2024-September 2025. Meanwhile, Panda Express and Raising Cane's, which already had relatively large shares of the segment six years ago, have also invested in college-adjacent locations, lifting their “Young Urban Singles” audience share.

Even legacy mass retailer Target benefited from small-format and large store expansions near universities – growing its captured market share of “Young Urban Singles”.

These shifts suggest that college towns will continue to be strategic growth markets, including for luxury brands like Hermès. By making inroads in college towns and with Gen Z shoppers, brands can strengthen loyalty early and build durable market share that remains as these young adults move on from campus life.

Influencer and Celebrity Pop-Ups Increase Gen Z Engagement

As Gen Z’s influence expands beyond campus borders, retail engagement is increasingly driven by cultural moments that resonate with this cohort. And malls are finding that temporary pop-ups including influencer collaborations and celebrity-led activations can attract these young consumers.

At The Grove, the Pandora pop-up with brand ambassador girl-group Katseye in October 2024 led to a modest but significant increase in the Gen Z-dominant  “Young Professionals” and “Young Urban Singles” segments within the mall’s captured trade area during the first week of the activation – compared to the average for the last twelve months. 

Similarly, at Westfield Century City, the Taylor Swift x TikTok activation from October 3rd-9th, 2025 – which allowed fans to immerse themselves in the sets from the viral “The Fate of Ophelia” music video boosted the shares of “Young Urban Singles”  and Young Professionals”, underscoring the star power of everything Taylor Swift.

And at American Dream, the pattern extended beyond younger audiences. On September 5th and 6th, 2025, Ninja Kidz attended the grand opening of their Action Park while Salish Matters made an appearance at the mall on September 6th for her skincare pop-up – which drew such large crowds that it had to be shut down. During these two event days, the mall’s shares of both “Young Professionals” and “Ultra-Wealthy Families” increased substantially, highlighting that pop-up events can draw young and affluent family audiences.

Consumer activity appeared strong in most of early 2025 – except in February, when extreme weather and leap-year comparisons drove sharp year-over-year (YoY) declines. But foot traffic slowed this summer, highlighting the toll of lingering financial uncertainty and strain. 

For advertisers, this underscores how pivotal seasonal promotions will be in reigniting demand. With many consumers cutting back on discretionary spending, well-timed and well-targeted campaigns will be essential to encourage shoppers to spend more freely during the holidays. These promotions don’t have to rely solely on price cuts — pop-culture collaborations and other creative product launches have also proven highly effective in driving traffic this year.

Still, not all retail categories have been equally affected by broader economic headwinds. But the biggest gains have been in the apparel category, where a bifurcation trend has emerged, boosting visits at both luxury and off-price retailers. The success of both segments underscores promotional strategies that can amplify momentum – steep-value discounts on one end of the spectrum, and exclusivity and quality on the other. Advertisers across retail segments can adapt this dual approach to engage both budget-driven and premium audiences effectively.

Deepening Bifurcation During the Holiday Period

And demographic data reveals just how deeply entrenched this bifurcation has become – especially during the holiday season.

The chart below examines monthly changes in the median household incomes (HHIs) of luxury and off-price retailers’ captured markets since January 2023. Even small shifts in HHI across major retail categories can signal meaningful changes in audience composition – and these patterns tell a clear story.

In luxury apparel, where the median HHI is well above the national average of $79.6K, visitor income follows a distinct seasonal rhythm. During the early holiday shopping period, HHI remains lower in October and dips slightly in November as middle-income shoppers take advantage of early promotions to snag products that may be out of reach the rest of the year. It then rises in December as affluent consumers return to purchase gifts. Notably, luxury HHI has trended upward since 2023 – with each holiday peak higher than the last – suggesting that this December’s visitor base will be even more affluent than last year.

For advertisers, this means late-season campaigns should prioritize prestige audiences while still engaging aspirational shoppers during early holiday promotions like Black Friday.

In the off-price apparel segment, on the other hand, median HHI typically declines during the holidays – especially in December – indicating an influx of more price-sensitive shoppers. And over time, this visitor base has become even more value-driven, reinforcing the importance of promotional messaging that emphasizes unbeatable deals and savings.

Together, these patterns once again highlight the growing need for tailored strategies: premium experiences for high earners and sharp value propositions for cost-conscious consumers – a lesson that may extend well beyond these categories.

Beauty and Electronics Set to Shine

Still, the graph above also highlights two additional segments potentially poised for holiday success: beauty & self care and electronics. 

Despite slower traffic over the past year, beauty retailers saw notable spikes around key recent promotional moments – including Black Friday, Mother’s Day, and Memorial Day. And although electronics retailers continued to face headwinds as consumers delayed big-ticket purchases – including during last year’s Black Friday – more recent milestones have seen traffic stabilize or even increase YoY. 

This indicates that the right promotional environment can still effectively drive engagement in these discretionary categories, and that deal-driven behavior is likely to remain a defining theme this holiday season. In addition, as the replacement cycle begins for major electronics first purchased during the pandemic, shoppers may be especially willing to upgrade to a new TV or laptop if the right offer comes along.

Finding Their Audiences in the Holiday Season

But to make the most of the opportunity presented by Q4, advertisers and retailers in the beauty and electronics spaces should pay close attention to the shifting demographics of their in-store audiences during the holiday season. 

For electronics retailers, married couples and homeowners become increasingly important during the peak holiday shopping period. Their share in the category’s captured market rises consistently each December, indicating that campaigns emphasizing household upgrades, family entertainment, and quality-of-life improvements may resonate most effectively in late Q4.

In contrast, beauty retailers – typically buoyed by young professionals – see their audience composition shift towards suburbia during the holidays. In December, the share of wealthy suburban families in beauty retailers’ captured markets grows meaningfully, while the share of young professionals declines. Advertisers can capitalize by highlighting premium bundles, limited-edition sets, and gifting options that speak directly to these households’ desire for premium, family-oriented products.

And to compensate, many retailers launched an “early” holiday season, rolling out promotions in October and early November to maximize consumer engagement. 

As the graph below shows, the shorter “core” season of 2024 unsurprisingly drew less in-store traffic across retail categories than the longer period the year before. Yet by embracing early promotions, retailers offset much of this shortfall, leading to overall holiday season results that, in many cases, matched or even exceeded 2023’s performance.

Looking ahead, 2025 once again brings a compressed “core” shopping window. And with shipping disruptions still influenced by shifting tariff regulations, more consumers may turn to brick-and-mortar stores earlier in the season to ensure timely purchases – further supporting offline traffic.

If retailers and advertisers double down on early-season engagement while continuing to drive momentum through the “core” weeks, YoY traffic for the 2025 holiday season could deliver even bigger overall gains than those seen in 2024.
