Forget water, soda, or tea – coffee reigns supreme in the United States. A recent study reveals that coffee surpasses even water as the nation's most consumed beverage. This continued demand is fueling a robust coffee shop sector that continues to thrive despite economic headwinds.

We took a closer look at industry-wide trends to understand how the segment is performing.

Robust-a Demand

The coffee segment has seen consistent visit growth over the past few years, demonstrating remarkable resilience – a trend fueled by steady consumer demand. Analyzing the baseline change in quarterly visits from Q1 2019 underscores this growth – and also reveals distinct seasonal patterns.

Visits to coffee shops plummeted during the pandemic, as consumers hunkered down at home and many independent coffee shops went out of business – but swiftly rebounded as consumers sought affordable luxuries and a sense of normalcy. Between 2021 and early 2024, coffee foot traffic continued to climb, as chains from Starbucks to Dutch Bros expanded their footprints. The visit growth followed a fairly predictable seasonal rhythm, slowing in the first quarter of the year and peaking in Q4. But though visits in Q4 2024 were slightly higher YoY, they remained relatively flat compared to Q2 and Q3 2024, possibly signaling that the industry may be reaching a plateau. 

A Whole Latte Growth

Looking at the data by region reveals that coffee shop visit growth has been widespread throughout the country, with most CBSAs experiencing growth relative to 2023. 

Some areas – like parts of the Midwest and South – experienced especially pronounced growth, suggesting heightened interest in coffee chains in these regions. Coffee visit growth in the South in particular may be partially a reflection of greater market penetration following chain expansions and inflows of domestic migration over the past several years. And while some areas of the country saw YoY declines, most CBSAs saw continued growth, highlighting the consistent appeal of coffee chains across a wide range of markets.

Mid-Sized Coffee Chains Brew Interest

There are hundreds of coffee shops nationwide catering to every kind of coffee drinker – from chains with 2-3 locations specializing in artisanal blends to major players like Starbucks and Dunkin'.  And diving into the visit split between small, mid-sized, and large coffee chains shows that mid-sized coffee chains  – many of which are drive-thru focused – are gradually claiming a greater share of the market. 

Between 2019 and 2024, the share of visitors to mid-sized coffee chains grew from 10.8% to 17.6%. Some of this growth can be attributed to Dutch Bros’ ascendance – but other fast-growing coffee chains like BIGGBY Coffee are contributing to this growth. 

Smaller coffee chains also saw their visit share increase, albeit more modestly, from 3.2% in 2019 to 4.4% in 2024. This trend suggests that, while Starbucks and Dunkin' continue to dominate, there remains plenty of room – and interest – for smaller, independent chains to thrive.

A Small Cup of Joe

Indeed, diving into visitor behavior at small, mid-sized, and large chains highlights the distinct niches these segments effectively fill. Between 2023 and 2024, short visits (<10 minutes) increased more than longer visits at mid-sized and large chains, while large chains actually saw a drop in longer visits, likely a result of increased emphasis on drive-thru and mobile ordering. 

Meanwhile small chains saw a greater YoY increase in long visits (+13.4%) than in short ones (+9.1%), suggesting that smaller coffee shops are increasingly filling the niche of a relaxed, destination-oriented experience. 

These shifts highlight the different needs that coffee shops can fill within a community, with some offering speed and convenience, while others can meet the desire for a relaxed and personalized coffee experience.

Sipping on Success

The success of the overall coffee segment highlights the continued consumer demand for affordable luxuries even as economic uncertainty persists, and the benefits of a diverse market that accommodates different visitor needs.

College students make up a small portion of the U.S. population, but they wield an outsize influence in the consumer market. Despite being notoriously budget-conscious, collegians value enjoyment and willingly splurge on experiences. And as tomorrow’s affluent consumers, today’s college students can deliver big future rewards for brands that successfully build lasting relationships with the segment. 

So with spring break upon us, we dove into the data to see how today’s college crowd allocates its dining dollars. Where do they like to eat out? And how can brands best cater to their preferences? 

Affordable Indulgences are the Name of the (College) Game

Tight budgets notwithstanding, students are always on the hunt for delicious treats that don’t break the bank. And while overindulgence in beer and pizza traditionally led to the dreaded “freshman fifteen”, location analytics show that today’s college students are a bit more discerning. They balance cost with a desire for elevated experiences – while also prioritizing healthier options. 

Against this backdrop, it may come as no surprise that fast-casual chains hit the college sweet spot between indulgence and affordability. In 2024, the share of STI:Landscape’s “Collegian” segment in the captured market trade areas of fast-casual chains nationwide stood at 54% above the nationwide baseline – meaning that this demographic’s representation among fast-casual’s visitor base was 54% above average. Specialty drinks – think healthful smoothies, boba teas, and juices – also stood out as particularly popular among the college crowd. Meanwhile, the share of college students in the captured markets of full-service restaurants (FSR), traditional coffee spots, and quick-service chains (QSR) was significantly lower – though still on par with, or slightly above, the nationwide baseline.

Chains Across Categories

Within the specialty drink and fast-casual segments, certain chains attract a particularly strong college following, including Noodles & Company – which likely draws students with its unique twist on comfort foods like mac and cheese. Playa Bowls and Kung Fu Tea are also especially popular among undergrads on the hunt for wholesome, convenient pick-me-ups.

Even within categories that typically see fewer college patrons, such as FSR and QSR, select brands maintain a strong hold on this market. Wine club Postino and KPOT Korean BBQ & Hotpot – both of which offer elevated, unique experiences that deliver plenty of bang for the buck –  are popular among collegians. Several mass-market FSR and QSR chains, including Waffle House, Texas Roadhouse, The Cheesecake Factory, Chili’s Grill & Bar, Raising Cane’s, Culver’s, Papa John’s Pizza, and Taco Bell also draw significantly higher-than-average college crowds. And within the coffee space, chains like Dutch Bros, and Scooter’s Coffee that offer specialty beverages like smoothies and energy drinks pull in above-average shares of college crowds.

Collegian Dining Behavior

How do college students interact with the dining brands they love? Zooming in on college town venues that cater specifically to the student crowd can shed light on the unique eating-out behaviors of this demographic. 

Lingering Over a Cup of Joe

Nationwide, the share of college students in coffee shops’ captured markets is just over the segment’s overall share in the population (+6%). But Starbucks locations near college campuses are positively teeming with students. A remarkable 81.9% of the captured market of the Starbucks near Indiana University, for example (on S. Indiana Ave in Bloomington, IN), belonged to STI:Landscape’s “Collegian” segment in 2024 – 5386% above the national average. Similar patterns were observed at locations near Texas A&M University and Penn State, where the segment made up 70.3% and 61.3%, respectively, of the locations’ visitor bases. 

And these students tended to linger far longer than visitors to other Starbucks locations, either to study or hang out with friends – between 28.0 and 34.0 minutes on average, compared to 14.1 minutes for the chain as a whole.

Snack Attack 101

Students also crave quick bites to power them through late-night study marathons and parties. Although most Taco Bells are busiest in the afternoons and early evenings, the one on S. Providence Rd. in Columbia, MO (near Mizzou) – with 68.5% of its market composed of “Collegians” – saw nearly half of visits take place after 8:00 PM last year. The same pattern held true at Taco Bell sites near the University of Florida in Gainesville and Texas A&M in College Station. 

Enjoying Summer Vacay

Collegian consumer activity typically peaks in August, when back-to-school shopping surges. And this holds true for college town restaurants as well. In 2024, visits to Chili’s locations serving college students – such as the Texas Ave S. location in College Station, TX, where the “Collegian” segment comprises 57.8% of its market – saw a notable visit spike in August. But in December, Chili's busiest month nationwide, things slowed down considerably at the analyzed campus-adjacent locations, as students headed back home for the holidays. 

Final Bites

From hearty fast-casual fare to specialty drinks, late-night burritos, and lengthy coffee shop study sessions, college students blend cost-consciousness with a desire for quality and experience. And their loyalty to brands that strike this balance – while catering to their unique preferences and behaviors – can be massive, especially once they leave campus and their spending power grows.

Old Navy shoppers seem to like activewear – all six of Old Navy’s biggest brick-and-mortar competitors in the apparel space carry a large selection of sportswear and athleisure. In fact, the apparel selection at DICK’s Sporting Goods – the fifth most frequently visited chain among Old Navy visitors – is limited to only athletic wear. Old Navy already holds a strong competitive position in this category with its popular activewear collection. 

But some Old Navy shoppers may be visiting brick-and-mortar apparel chains in search of the perfect evening dress – five of the top six retailers competing with Old Navy for apparel visits carry evening wear. So expanding its product line to include prom dresses and similar items may help Old Navy recapture some of the traffic lost to competitors from customers in search of occasionwear.

American Dream’s Bet on Experiential Finally Paying Off

American Dream has emphasized the experiential potential of malls from its inception. The massive shopping, dining, and leisure venue includes a vast array of indoor and outdoor entertainment facilities such as a water park, an indoor ski slope, and an aquarium as well as numerous stores and restaurants. And although the mall – which opened just before the COVID pandemic – has dealt with its share of setbacks, recent data suggests that American Dream has turned a corner, with leasing picking up and year-over-year quarterly visits positive throughout 2024.

JonasCon Drives Crowds to American Dream 

American Dream’s position as both a mall and an entertainment complex along with its location in New Jersey – the Jonas Brothers’ home state – made it the natural choice to host JonasCon, a one-day fan convention on March 23rd, 2025 celebrating the band’s twentieth anniversary. 

The event proved to be a major success, with visits to American Dream surging 146.5% higher than the YTD average and 72.8% higher than a YTD Sunday. Visitors during JonasCon also stayed significantly longer in the mall, with the average visit on March 23rd lasting 220 minutes – almost four hours – compared to an average stay of 141 minutes for the YTD.

Out-of-Town Visits Spike 

The JonasCon visit spike was driven in part by own-of-towners making the trip especially for the event. On March 23rd, over 25% of visitors to American Dream came from at least 50 miles away, compared to just 17.9% of visitors coming from 50+ miles away for the YTD average. The surge in overall visits, the extended dwell time, and the significant influx of out-of-towners directly translated to increased opportunities for spending across the entire venue.

Affluent Singles Came Out for JonasCon

The event also seems to have attracted more singles from more affluent households compared to American Dream’s regular visitor base: The mall’s trade area on March 23rd included fewer households with children and more one person and non-family households compared to the YTD average, and the trade area median household income (HHI) stood at $93.0K compared to the $89.9K median HHI for the YTD. 

The popularity of JonasCon among the coveted demographic of affluent singles highlights how malls can target certain audiences by organizing specific happenings. Most malls offer something for everyone – American Dream in particular has a range of offerings for different age groups and at different price points, including a variety of free exhibits. But while providing options for almost any consumer creates the potential for a large and varied visitor base, certain demographics might need an extra nudge to come through the door for the first time. Offering unique experiences can help malls bring in certain groups of consumers that may be underrepresented in the mall’s regular visitor base – perhaps fostering return visits and growing their regular audience.

What Does JonasCon’s Success Mean for the Future of Malls? 

Through JonasCon, American Dream has once again cemented its position at the forefront of the experiential mall movement. The venue represents a broader trend as some malls evolve beyond transactional spaces to become centers of shared experience – whether through built-in elements or by offering unique experiences through one-off entertainment and events. 

The success of JonasCon along with the ongoing visit growth at American Dream highlights the current consumer appetite for exciting and engaging offline experiences – and malls are extremely well positioned to meet this demand.

Dollar Tree's recently announced plan to sell Family Dollar at a significant loss is another sign of the recent struggles in the discount and dollar store sector, highlighted by last year’s closure of 99 Cents Only and Big Lots' bankruptcy filing. We dove into the data to understand what is driving Dollar Tree’s decision and what this means for Family Dollar moving forward.  

Growth Decelerating for Wider Discount & Dollar Store Category

The discount & dollar store category had been on the rise before the pandemic, and COVID gave the segment another considerable boost – in part thanks to discount and dollar stores’ designation as “essential retailers” that could remain open during lockdowns. Category leaders Dollar General and Dollar Tree continued their aggressive fleet expansions to meet the growing consumer demand, which led to a substantial overall increase in visits to the category. 

But zooming in on 2024 data suggests that visit growth to the category is slowing down. Although discount & dollar stores are holding on to their pandemic gains – traffic to the segment is still 57.8% higher than it was in 2017 – year-over-year (YoY) growth is slowing, with 2024 visits up 2.8% compared to 2023, in contrast to 2022 and 2023’s YoY jumps of 7.8% and 7.7%, respectively. 

This deceleration of growth is not in itself worrisome – no retail category can sustain rapid growth indefinitely. But the visit trends do signal that discount & dollar store leaders seeking an edge over the competition will need to adopt more strategic approaches and avoid allocating resources to overly risky ventures.

Dollar Tree Thrived While Family Dollar Lagged Behind 

Overall visits to the Dollar Tree brand were already on the rise prior to COVID and skyrocketed over the pandemic – leading to a 60.1% increase in overall visits between 2017 and 2024. But, like with the wider category, traffic growth to Dollar Tree seems to be decelerating – the banner posted a 5.4% YoY increase in visits in 2024 compared to a 13.9% YoY increase in 2023.

But Family Dollar lagged behind, apparently immune to the COVID-driven dollar store visit surge. Traffic to the chain in 2024 was down 4.0% YoY and just 3.6% higher than it was in 2017. And although Dollar Tree’s decision to close nearly 1000 Family Dollar stores appears to be bearing fruit – in 2024, average visits per venue were up 1.7% YoY and 16.9% relative to the 2017 baseline – the improvement seems to have been insufficient to prevent the banner’s sale.

What Hampered Family Dollar’s Growth? 

Family Dollar has faced plenty of difficulties in the last several years, so it’s difficult to attribute Dollar Tree’s offloading of the banner to a single factor. Still, one major element that likely hurt the brand’s performance was the intensified competition from other discount and dollar store leaders – including from sister banner Dollar Tree. 

Family Dollar visitors have always been keen Walmart shoppers – since 2019, over 90% of Family Dollar yearly visitors also visited Walmart, and these cross-visit trends have remained relatively stable over the past six years. Other dollar stores were not always as popular with Family Dollar shoppers – in 2019, less than two-thirds of Family Dollar visitors also visited a Dollar Tree or a Dollar General. But as those chains grew, so did their appeal to Family Dollar shoppers – by 2024, over three-quarters of Family Dollar visitors also visited Dollar Tree or Dollar General – and this increased competition likely hampered Family Dollar’s growth.

Family Dollar Can Fill a Unique Niche in the Dollar Store Space

Still, despite the increasingly competitive discount and dollar store space, analyzing Family Dollar’s trade area composition reveals that the chain fills a unique niche within the broader discount retail sector. 

Family Dollar tends to attract the least affluent visitor base – the median household income (HHI) in the chain’s captured market trade area is $53.9K, compared to $67.6K, $61.8K, and $68.7K for Walmart, Dollar General, and Dollar Tree, respectively. Family Dollar’s captured market also includes the highest share of urban areas, with 36.9% of its trade area defined as “Urban Periphery” or “Principal Urban Center” by the Esri: Tapestry Segmentation database. 

Family Dollar can draw on its distinctive position as an urban-based retailer catering to value-seeking consumers to set itself apart from the competition and lay the groundwork for a successful resurgence.

Family Dollar’s Path to a Comeback

Although Family Dollar was sold at a substantial discount from its original purchase price, the chain still has a promising opportunity to re-establish itself as a powerful contender in the discount retail landscape. By prioritizing locations in urban areas that are less exposed to direct competition from the other major players and keeping its prices competitive with those of other dollar and discount retailers, Family Dollar can lay the groundwork for a successful resurgence.

Consumers have been taking stock of their habits and behaviors over the past few years. With the explosion of semaglutide medications in the market and the high frequency of adoption by consumers, there’s a renewed focus on health and wellness across the U.S. population that extends to other consumption behaviors. One of the outcomes of this change in perspective is the increased scrutiny around the consumption of alcoholic beverages – especially among younger consumers. 

At the same time, alcohol consumption increased handily during the pandemic, which has helped liquor stores and retail chains to stand out from the rest of the retail industry. As we hit the five year anniversary of the beginning of the pandemic, it’s time to dive deeper into the Bev Alc space to uncover new trends, changes with consumer engagement, and potential headwinds for the industry. 

Deceleration in Liquor Store Visit Growth in 2024

Liquor store chains benefited greatly from shifts in behavior during the pandemic, and for the most part, they’ve been able to sustain those levels of success over the past few years. However, 2024 signaled a deceleration of foot traffic growth across chains, particularly in the second half of the year. 

Bev Alc had been a visitation leader in the essential side of the retail industry in the early days of the pandemic, and the category continued to benefit greatly from sustained levels of alcohol consumption even after pandemic restrictions eased. But as with all pandemic-era consumer habits, as we approach the five year anniversary, reversal of some trends are taking shape:  While year-over-year visits continued to rise in 2024, last year’s 4.0% average increase in monthly visits was significantly less than the 8.6%, 9.1%, 7.1%, or 6.7% average increases in monthly visits in 2020, 2021, 2022, and 2023, respectively. 

There are also various factors that could potentially impact the industry this year: Decreased consumption of alcohol that could have played a role in 2024’s softening of visits is likely to continue in 2025, and potential tariffs on popular spirits like Tequila and Mezcal may impact consumer preferences going forward.

Spec’s Outperformed the Bev Alc Category in 2024  

From a retailer perspective, Spec’s posted the strongest visit performance while BevMo! had the most challenging 2024 of the larger liquor retail chains, although most chains experienced some softening in foot traffic throughout the year. Bev Alc retail is a notoriously regional and local category, meaning that changes in foot traffic by chain are often impacted by what’s going on in a specific region of the U.S. BevMO! services Arizona, California and Washington, so the chain’s modest performance may point to some decreases in demand across the western part of the country. Meanwhile, Spec’s operates primarily in Texas, and its consistent YoY visit growth throughout 2024 may suggest that the shift in alcohol consumption habits has been more muted in the Lone Star State. 

What’s Driving Liquor Store Visitation Shifts? 

With the broader context of what’s going on across the category analyzed, what’s really driving these changes in visitation to liquor stores? As referenced, there’s been a narrative that younger consumers’ changing alcohol consumption habits will greatly impact the Bev Alc space. 

But layering Spatial.ai’s Personalive demographic and psychographic visitor segmentation onto liquor store’s captured market reveals a slightly more nuanced reality. The data shows that between 2019 and 2024, the share of wealthier families and of Educated Urbanites – a younger, well-educated, and more affluent cohort – in the captured market of liquor stores. During the same period, the share of Young Professionals and Young Urban Singles – both segments of younger visitors have lower median household incomes than Educated Urbanites – actually increased. 

What the data reveals is that we can’t build a singular narrative around the alcohol habits of all younger consumers; there’s also a layer of socioeconomics that has also impacted consumers' desire to frequent liquor stores and engage in alcohol consumption. This knowledge may also contribute to the changes we’ve seen in BevMo!’s business, as their highest shares of visitation come from wealthier families and Educated Urbanites.

Shifts in Visit Times

Foot traffic estimates also reveal that consumers have shifted the time of day that they visit liquor store chains. In 2024, we observed a higher share of visits after 3 PM compared to 2019, with the largest penetration shift coming between the hours of 6 PM to 8 PM. Consumers are visiting liquor stores more frequently after working hours than before the pandemic, which underscores the shifting role of alcohol in people’s lives. Our data also indicated a higher distribution of visits during weekdays in 2024 compared to 2019, but a lower share of weekend visits. 

Liquor store visit frequency contextualizes the changes that we’ve observed in consumption habits, highlighting that, despite the increased interest in moderating drinking habits, the pandemic did fundamentally shift how people engage with the category and alcohol retail has become more of a presence in consumers’ weekly routines. 

Adapting to Shifting Consumer Preferences 

As the cultural perception of alcohol shifts, changes are likely to occur across the industry. We’ve observed more liquor brands opening bars and drinking establishments to engage directly with consumers, while there’s also still a continued rise in local and regional brands popping up. Another area that has been growing steadily over the past few years is non-alcoholic beverages. The aisles of grocery stores and liquor stores are now filled with non-alcoholic alternatives of brand names, as well as mocktail entrants into wildly popular canned cocktails. Beyond that, there’s also been an increase in the number of non-alcoholic bottle shops, and the prevalence of non-alcoholic options will likely continue to grow and extend to other areas of the country outside of major cities. The Bev Alc industry is at a true crossroads with consumers, and consumer behavior will dictate how the industry must evolve to stay relevant.

C-Stores: Charging Ahead

Grabbing a coffee or snack at a convenience store is a time-honored road trip tradition – but increasingly, Convenience Stores (C-Stores) have also emerged as places people go out of their way to visit. 

Convenience stores have thrived in recent years, making inroads into the discretionary dining space and growing both their audiences and their sales. Between April 2023 and March 2024, C-Stores experienced consistent year-over-year (YoY) visit growth, generally outperforming Overall Retail. Unsurprisingly, C-Stores fell behind Overall Retail in November and December 2023, when holiday shoppers flocked to malls and superstores to buy gifts for loved ones. But in January 2024, the segment regained its lead, growing YoY visits even as Overall Retail languished in the face of an Arctic blast that had many consumers hunkering down at home.

C-Stores’ current strength is partially due to the significant innovation by leading players in the space: Chains like Casey’s, Maverik, Buc-ee’s, and Rutter’s are investing in both in their product offerings and in their physical venues to transform the humble C-Store from a stop along the way into a bona fide destination. Dive into the data to explore some of the key strategies helping C-Stores drive consumer engagement and stay ahead of the pack. 

Four C-Store Brands Ahead of the Curve

While chain expansion may explain some of the C-Store segment growth, a look at visit-per-location trends shows that demand is growing at the store level as well. Over the past year (April 2023 to March 2024), average visits per location on an industry-wide basis grew by 1.8%, compared to the year prior (April 2022 to 2023). 

And within this growing segment, some brands are distinguishing themselves and outperforming category averages. Casey’s, for example, saw the average number of visits to each of its locations increase by 2.3% over the same time frame – while Maverik, Buc-ee’s and Rutter’s saw visits per location increase by 3.2%, 3.4% and 3.9%, respectively.

Chains That Are Becoming The Final C-Store Destinations

Each in its own way, Casey’s, Maverik, Buc-ee’s, and Rutter’s, are helping to transform C-Stores from pit stops where people can stretch their legs and grab a cup of coffee to destinations in and of themselves. 

Casey’s & Maverik: Leaning into Breakfast 

Midwestern gas and c-store chain Casey’s – famous for its breakfast pizza and other grab-and-go breakfast items – has emerged as a prime spot for fast food pizza lovers to grab a slice first thing in the morning. And Salt Lake City, Utah-based Maverik – which recently acquired Kum & Go and its 400-plus stores – is also establishing itself as a breakfast destination thanks to its specialty burritos and other chef-inspired creations.  

Casey’s and Maverik’s popular breakfast options are likely helping the chains receive its larger-than-average share of morning visits: In Q1 2024, 16.3% of visits to Maverik and 17.5% of visits to Casey’s took place during the 7:00 AM - 10:00 AM daypart, compared to just 14.9% of visits to the wider C-Store category.

Psychographic data from the Spatial.ai’s FollowGraph dataset – which looks at the social media activity of a given audience – also suggests that Casey’s and Maverik’s have opened stores in locations that allow them to reach their target audience. Compared to the average consumer, residents of Casey’s potential market are 7% more likely to be “Fast Food Pizza Lovers” than both the average consumer and the average C-Store trade area resident. Residents of Maverik’s potential market are 16% more likely than the average consumer to be “Mexican Food Enthusiasts,” compared to residents of the average C-Store’s trade area who are only 1% more likely to fall into that category.

With both chains expanding, Casey’s and Maverik can hope to introduce new audiences to their unique breakfast options and solidify their hold over the morning daypart within the C-Store space over the next few years. 

Buc-ee’s: Bigger Is Better

Everything is said to be bigger in the Lone Star State, and Texas-based convenience store chain Buc-ee’s – holder of the record for the worlds’ largest C-Store – is no exception. With a unique array of specialty food items and award-winning bathrooms, Buc-ee’s has emerged as a well-known tourist attraction. And the popular chain’s status as a visitor hotspot is reflected in two key metrics. 

First, Buc-ee’s attracts a much greater share of weekend visits than other convenience store chains. In Q1 2024, 39.6% of visits to Buc-ee’s took place on the weekends, compared to just 28.3% for the wider C-Store industry. And second, Buc-ee’s captured markets feature higher-than-average shares of family-centric households – including those belonging to Experian: Mosaic’s Suburban Style, Flourishing Families, and Promising Families segments.

Rather than merely a place to stop on the way to work, Buc-ee’s has emerged as a favored destination for families and for people looking for something fun to do on their days off.

Rutter’s: Expanding Upward

Buc-ee’s isn’t the only C-Store chain that believes bigger is better. Pennsylvania-based Rutter’s is increasing visits and customer dwell time by expanding its footprint – both in terms of store count and venue size. New stores will be 10,000 to 12,000 square feet – significantly larger than the industry average of around 3,100 square feet. And in more urban areas, where space is at a premium, the company is building upwards.

Rutter’s added a second floor to one of its existing locations in York, PA in December 2023. The remodel, which was met with enthusiasm by customers, provided additional seating for up to 30 diners, a beer cave, and an expanded wine selection. And in Q1 2024, the location experienced 15.6% YoY visit growth – compared to a chainwide average of 7.6%. Visitors to the newly remodeled Rutter’s also stayed significantly longer than they did pre-renovation. The share of extended visits to the store (longer than ten minutes) grew from 20.8% in Q1 2023 to 27.0% in Q1 2024 – likely from people browsing the chain’s selection of beers or grabbing a bite to eat. 

Convenience At Every Corner

Convenience stores are flourishing, transforming into some of the most exciting dining and tourist destinations in the country. Today, C-Store customers can expect to find brisket sandwiches, gourmet coffees, or craft beers, rather than the stale cups of coffee of old. And the data shows that customers are receptive to these innovations, helping drive the segment’s success.

Q1 2024 Overview 

Overall Retail on the Rise

The first quarter of 2024 was generally a good one for retailers. Though unusually cold and stormy weather left its mark on the sector’s January performance, February and March saw steady year-over-year (YoY) weekly visit growth that grew more robust as the quarter wore on. 

March ended on a high note, with the week of March 25th – including Easter Sunday – seeing a 6.1% YoY visit boost, driven in part by increased retail activity in the run-up to the holiday. (Last year, Easter fell on April 9th, 2023, so the week of March 25th is being compared to a regular week.)

Though prices remain high and consumer confidence has yet to fully regain its footing, retail’s healthy Q1 showing may be a sign of good things to come in 2024. 

Success Across Categories

Drilling down into the data for leading retail segments demonstrates the continued success of value-priced, essential, and wellness-related categories. 

Discount & Dollar Stores led the pack with 11.2% YoY quarterly visit growth, followed by Grocery Stores, Fitness, and Superstores – all of which outperformed Overall Retail. Dining also enjoyed a YoY quarterly visit bump, despite the segment’s largely discretionary nature. And despite the high interest rates continuing to weigh on the housing and home renovation markets, Home Improvement & Furnishings maintained just a minor YoY visit gap. 

Discount & Dollar Stores 

Discount & Dollar Stores experienced strong YoY visit growth throughout most of Q1 – and as go-to destinations for groceries and other other essential goods, they held their own even during mid-January’s Arctic blast. In the last week of March, shoppers flocked to leading discount chains for everything from chocolate Easter bunnies to basket-making supplies – driving a remarkable 21.5% YoY visit spike.

Dollar General Reins Supreme

Dollar General continued to dominate the Discount & Dollar Store space in Q1, with visits to its locations accounting for nearly half of the segment’s quarterly foot traffic (44.7%). Next in line was Dollar Tree, followed by Family Dollar and Five Below. Together, the four chains – all of which experienced positive YoY quarterly visit growth – drew a whopping 91.6% of quarterly visits to the category.

Grocery Stores

Rain or shine, people have to eat. And like Discount & Dollar Stores, traditional Grocery Stores were relatively busy through January as shoppers braved the storms to stock up on needed items. Momentum continued to build throughout the quarter, culminating in a 10.5% foot traffic increase in the week ending with Easter Sunday. 

Aldi Leads the Way

Like in other categories, it was budget-friendly Grocery banners that took the lead. No-frills Aldi drove a chain-wide 24.4% foot traffic increase in Q1, by expanding its fleet – while also growing the average number of visits per location. Other value-oriented chains, including Trader Joe’s and Food Lion, experienced significant foot traffic increases of their own. And though conventional grocery leaders like H-E-B, Kroger, and Albertsons saw smaller visit bumps, they too outperformed Q1 2023 by meaningful margins.

Fitness

January is New Year’s resolution season – when people famously pick themselves up off the couch, dust off their trainers, and vow to go to the gym more often. And with wellness still top of mind for many consumers, the Fitness category enjoyed robust YoY visit growth throughout most of Q1 – despite lapping a strong Q1 2023.

Predictably, Fitness’s visit growth slowed during the last week of March, when many Americans likely indulged in Easter treats rather than work out. But given the category’s strength over the past several years, there is every reason to believe it will continue to flourish.

Value Chains Come out Ahead

For Fitness chains, too, cost was key to success in Q1 – with value gyms experiencing the biggest visit jumps. EōS Fitness and Crunch Fitness, both of which offer low-cost membership options, saw their Q1 visits skyrocket 28.9% and 22.0% YoY, respectively – helped in part by aggressive expansions. At the same time, premium and mid-range gyms like Life Time and LA Fitness are also finding success – showing that when it comes to Fitness, there’s plenty of room for a variety of models to thrive. 

Superstores

Superstores – including wholesale clubs – are prime destinations for big, planned shopping expeditions – during which customers can load up on a month’s supply of food items or stock up on home goods. And perhaps for this reason, the category felt the impact of January’s inclement weather more than either dollar chains or supermarkets – which are more likely to see shoppers pop in as needed for daily essentials.

But like Grocery Stores and Discount & Dollar Stores, Superstores ended the quarter with an impressive YoY visit spike, likely fueled by Easter holiday shoppers.

Warehouse Clubs Continue to Thrive

As in Q4 2023, membership warehouse chains – Costco Wholesale, BJ’s Wholesale Club, and Sam’s Club – drove much of the Superstore category’s positive visit growth, as shoppers likely engaged in  mission-driven shopping in an effort to stretch their budgets. Still, segment mainstays Walmart and Target also enjoyed positive foot traffic growth, with YoY visits up 3.9% and 3.5%, respectively.

Dining

Moving into more discretionary territory, Dining experienced a marked January slump, as hunkered-down consumers likely opted for delivery. But the segment rallied in February and March, even though foot traffic dipped slightly during the last week of March, when many families gathered to enjoy home-cooked holiday meals. 

Coffee, Coffee, Coffee!

Coffee Chains and Fast-Casual Restaurants saw the largest YoY  visit increases, followed by QSR – highlighting the enduring power of lower-cost, quick-serve dining options. But Full-Service Restaurants (FSR) also saw a slight segment-wide YoY visit uptick in Q1 – good news for a sector that has yet to bounce back from the one-two punch of COVID and inflation. Within each Dining category, however, some chains experienced outsize visit growth  – including favorites like Dutch Bros. Coffee, Slim Chickens, In-N-Out Burger, and Texas Roadhouse.

Home Improvement 

Since the shelter-in-place days of COVID – when everybody had their sourdough starter and DIY was all the rage – Home Improvement & Furnishings chains have faced a tough environment. Many deferred or abandoned home improvement projects in the wake of inflation, and elevated interest rates coupled with a sluggish housing market put a further damper on the category.

Against this backdrop, Home Improvement & Furnishings’ relatively lackluster Q1 visit performance should come as no surprise. But the narrowing of the visit gap in March – which also saw one week of positive visit growth – may serve as a promising sign for the segment. (The abrupt foot traffic drop during the week of March 25th, 2024 is likely a just reflection of Easter holiday shopping pattern.)

Home Improvement Bright Spots

Within the Home Improvement & Furnishings space, some bright spots stood out in Q1 – including Harbor Freight Tools, which saw visits increase by 10.0%, partly due to the brand’s growing store count. Tractor Supply Co., Menards, and Ace Hardware also registered visit increases.

Good Things to Come

January 2024’s stormy weather left its mark on the Q1 retail environment, especially for discretionary categories. But as the quarter progressed, retailers rallied, with healthy YoY foot traffic growth that peaked during the last week of March – the week of Easter Sunday. All in all, retail’s positive Q1 performance leaves plenty of room for optimism about what’s in store for the rest of 2024.

The State of QSR and Fast Casual

Over the past year, Fast-Casual & Quick-Service Restaurant (QSR) chains have thrived, consistently outperforming the Full-Service Dining segment with positive year-over-year (YoY) visit growth every quarter since 2023. In this white paper, we dive into the data for leading dining chains to take a closer look at what’s driving visitors to the QSR segment and what other dining categories can learn from fast-food’s success. 

Speed of Service: It’s the Name of the Game

One of the key factors separating QSR chains – aptly known as “fast food” – from the rest of the dining industry is the speed at which diners can get a ready-to-eat meal in their hands. And within the QSR space, speed of service is one of the ways chains differentiate themselves from their competition

Getting Customers (In and) Out the Door

Leading fast-food chains are investing heavily in technologies and systems designed to help them serve customers ever more quickly:  

Taco Bells “Touch Display Kitchen System” is designed to optimize cooking operations and improve wait times, while the chain’s Go Mobile restaurant format seeks to alleviate bottlenecks in the drive-thru lane. Chick-fil-A also has dedicated channels for quick mobile order pick-up and is planning four-lane drive-thrus with second-floor kitchens to get meals out even faster. And to save time at the drive-thru, Wendy’s is experimenting with generative AI and developing an underground, robotic system to deliver digital orders to designated parking spots within seconds.

And location intelligence shows that all three chains are succeeding in reducing customer wait times. Over the past four years, Taco Bell, Chick-fil-A, and Wendy’s have seen steady increases in the share of visits to their venues lasting less than 10 minutes. 

Faster Service Driving Visits 

The data also suggests that investment in speed of service can increase overall visitation to QSR venues.

In late 2022, McDonald’s opened a to-go-only location outside of Dallas, TX with a lane dedicated to mobile order fulfillment via a conveyor belt. And in Q1 2024, this venue not only had a larger share of short visits compared to the other McDonald’s locations in the region, but also more visits compared to the McDonald’s average visits per venue in the Dallas-Fort Worth CBSA. 

This provides further support for the power of fast order fulfillment to drive QSR visits, with customers motivated by the prospect of getting in and out quickly. 

Full-Service Restaurants Experiments with Fast Service

The success of the fast-food segment is even driving other restaurants to borrow typical QSR formats – especially during time slots when people are most likely to grab a bite to eat on the go.

In September 2023, full-service leader Applebee’s opened a new format: a fast casual location focusing on To Go orders in Deer Park, NY, featuring pick-up lockers for digital orders and limited dine-in options without table service.

And the new format is already attracting outsized weekday and lunchtime crowds. In Q1 2024, 20.5% of visits to the chain’s To Go venue took place during the 12:00 PM - 2:00 PM time slot, while the average Applebee’s in the New York-Newark-Jersey City CBSA received less than 10% of its daily visits during that daypart. The new restaurant also drew a significantly higher share of weekday visits than other nearby venues. 

This suggests that takeaway-focused venues could help full-service chains grow their visit share during weekdays and the coveted lunch rush, when consumers may be less inclined to have a sit-down meal. 

The Rise of Chicken Concepts  

An additional factor contributing to QSR and Fast Casual success in 2024 may be the rise of chicken-based chains. Chicken is a versatile ingredient that has remained relatively affordable, which could be contributing to its growing popularity and the rapid expansion of several chicken chains. 

Comparing the relative visit share (not including delivery) of various sub-segments within the wider Fast Casual & QSR space showed that the share of visits to chains with chicken-based menus has increased steadily between 2019 and 2023: In Q1 2024, 15.3% of Fast Casual & QSR visits were to a chicken restaurant concept, compared to just 13.4% in Q1 2019.

Big Players with Big Visits Per Venue

The strength of chicken-based concepts is also evident when comparing average visits per venue at leading chicken chains with the wider Fast Casual & QSR average. 

Both Chick-fil-A, the nation’s predominant chicken chain, and Raising Cane’s, a rapidly expanding player in the fast-food chicken space, are receiving significantly more visits per venue than their Fast Casual & QSR peers: In Q1 2024, Raising Cane’s and Chick-fil-A restaurants saw an average of 153.0% and 237.7% more visits per venue, respectively, compared to the combined Fast Casual & QSR industries average.

The elevated traffic at chicken chains likely plays a part in their profitability per restaurant relative to other Fast Casual & QSR concepts with more sizable fleets.

Celebrating the Calendar

QSR and Fast-Casual chains are also particularly adept at generating seasonal visit spikes through unique Limited Time Offers and holiday promotions adapted to the calendar. 

Diving into Seafood for Lent

Arby’s recently launched a 2 for $6 sandwich promotion on February 1st, with two of the three sandwich options on promotion being fish-based in an apparent attempt to entice diners eschewing meat in observance of Lent. The company also brought back a specialty fish sandwich, likely with the goal of further appealing to the Lent-observing demographic. 

The offers seem to have driven significant traffic spikes, with foot traffic during the promotion period significantly higher than the January daily visit average. And traffic was particularly elevated during Lent – which this year fell on Wednesday, February 14th through Thursday, March 28th, with visits spiking on Fridays when those observing are most likely to seek out fish-based meals. 

Some of the elevated visits in the second half of Q1 may be attributed to the comparison to a weaker January across the dining segment. But the success of the fish-forward promotion specifically during Lent suggests that the company’s calendar-appropriate LTO played a major role in driving visits to the chain. 

Visits in the Air at White Castle’s Valentine’s Dinner

Shorter-term promotions – even those lasting just a single day – can also drive major visit spikes. 

Since 1991, White Castle has transformed its fast-food restaurants into a reservation-only, “fine-dining” experience for dinner on Valentine's Day. In 2024, Valentine’s Day fell on a Wednesday, and White Castle’s sit-down event drove a 11.8% visit increase relative to the average Wednesday in Q1 2024 and a 3.9% visit increase compared to the overall Q1 2024 daily average.

The elevated visit numbers over Valentine’s Day are even more impressive when considering that a full-service dining room can accommodate fewer visitors than the drive-thrus and counter service of White Castle’s typical QSR configuration. The spike in February 14th visits may also be attributed to an increased number of diners showing up throughout the day to take in the Valentine’s Day buzz. 

QSR & Fast Casual Lead the Way 

QSR and Fast-Casual dining are having a moment. And the data shows that a combination of factors – including fast and efficient service, the rising popularity of chicken-based dining concepts, and effective LTOs – are all playing a part in the categories’ recent success.
