Q1 2025 Quick-Service and Fast-Casual Recap

With Q1 2025 just under our belts, we dove into the data to see how quick-service and fast-casual restaurants (QSRs) fared in the year’s early months. Which chains managed to weather the headwinds – both fiscal and meteorological – that have weighed on consumer traffic in recent months? And which brands emerged as top performers? 

We dove into the data to find out. 

Raising Cane’s and Taco Bell Lead QSR Space

QSRs faced a challenging environment in the first part of 2025, as harsh winter weather, economic uncertainty, and heightened value competition from fast-casual chains, full-service restaurants (Chili’s, anyone?), and even grocery stores drove visits down. Overall, QSR foot traffic declined by 1.6% year over year (YoY) in Q1, with much of the drop occurring in February – when a polar vortex and the comparison to a leap-year February 2024 led to a traffic dip. By March, however, visits began to stabilize, and the segment finished out the month with foot traffic levels essentially flat YoY (-0.3%). 

Still, some QSRs stood out. Rapidly expanding Raising Cane’s Chicken Fingers, for example, saw YoY gains in both overall visits and average visits per location (12.3% and 3.7%, respectively). Known for quick, quality fare – the chain’s sauces have even inspired viral tik-tok videos – Raising Cane’s fleet growth is clearly meeting robust demand.

Taco Bell also emerged as a Q1 leader, with quarterly visits rising 3.7% YoY. The brand doubled down on value with its expanded selection of Luxe Cravings Boxes. And the tex-mex giant’s limited-time Crunchwrap Slider offering – launched in early 2025 to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Crunchwrap Supreme – generated plenty of buzz

Meanwhile, McDonald’s, which launched its new McValue menu in January 2025, narrowed its visit gap to 1.0% in March – an encouraging sign as the year gets into full swing.

Fast-Casual Brands Leading the Pack

Fast-casual fared somewhat better, ending Q1 2025 with flat YoY visits (+0.0%). And though the segment mirrored QSR’s monthly pattern of gains in January, a dip in February, and stabilization in March, several major players posted positive Q1 results – including Chipotle (+4.6%), Panda Express (+3.8%), Jersey Mike’s Subs (+3.1%) and Qdoba Mexican Grill (+1.5%). While fleet expansion contributed to some of these increases, menu innovation – particularly well-chosen chicken and shrimp-focused limited-time offerings – likely also played a role.

Smaller Fries Making Big Waves

In addition to these major chains, several smaller fast-casual brands enjoyed outsized visit performance in early 2025, driven by rapid expansion meeting strong demand. Dave’s Hot Chicken, capitalizing on consumers’ ongoing enthusiasm for chicken dishes, logged a remarkable 59.3% YoY visit surge in Q1 2025, and an 11.6% jump in average visits per location. Health-forward chains CAVA and sweetgreen also grew their footprints – and audiences – likely supported by the return-to-office trend and continued interest in wholesome, convenient dining options. 

Looking Ahead

All told, QSR and fast-casual brands held their own in Q1 2025 – with some brands standing out through strategic value offerings, menu innovation, and expansion. How will QSRs and fast-casual chains continue to fare as 2025 wears on?

College students make up a small portion of the U.S. population, but they wield an outsize influence in the consumer market. Despite being notoriously budget-conscious, collegians value enjoyment and willingly splurge on experiences. And as tomorrow’s affluent consumers, today’s college students can deliver big future rewards for brands that successfully build lasting relationships with the segment. 

So with spring break upon us, we dove into the data to see how today’s college crowd allocates its dining dollars. Where do they like to eat out? And how can brands best cater to their preferences? 

Affordable Indulgences are the Name of the (College) Game

Tight budgets notwithstanding, students are always on the hunt for delicious treats that don’t break the bank. And while overindulgence in beer and pizza traditionally led to the dreaded “freshman fifteen”, location analytics show that today’s college students are a bit more discerning. They balance cost with a desire for elevated experiences – while also prioritizing healthier options. 

Against this backdrop, it may come as no surprise that fast-casual chains hit the college sweet spot between indulgence and affordability. In 2024, the share of STI:Landscape’s “Collegian” segment in the captured market trade areas of fast-casual chains nationwide stood at 54% above the nationwide baseline – meaning that this demographic’s representation among fast-casual’s visitor base was 54% above average. Specialty drinks – think healthful smoothies, boba teas, and juices – also stood out as particularly popular among the college crowd. Meanwhile, the share of college students in the captured markets of full-service restaurants (FSR), traditional coffee spots, and quick-service chains (QSR) was significantly lower – though still on par with, or slightly above, the nationwide baseline.

Chains Across Categories

Within the specialty drink and fast-casual segments, certain chains attract a particularly strong college following, including Noodles & Company – which likely draws students with its unique twist on comfort foods like mac and cheese. Playa Bowls and Kung Fu Tea are also especially popular among undergrads on the hunt for wholesome, convenient pick-me-ups.

Even within categories that typically see fewer college patrons, such as FSR and QSR, select brands maintain a strong hold on this market. Wine club Postino and KPOT Korean BBQ & Hotpot – both of which offer elevated, unique experiences that deliver plenty of bang for the buck –  are popular among collegians. Several mass-market FSR and QSR chains, including Waffle House, Texas Roadhouse, The Cheesecake Factory, Chili’s Grill & Bar, Raising Cane’s, Culver’s, Papa John’s Pizza, and Taco Bell also draw significantly higher-than-average college crowds. And within the coffee space, chains like Dutch Bros, and Scooter’s Coffee that offer specialty beverages like smoothies and energy drinks pull in above-average shares of college crowds.

Collegian Dining Behavior

How do college students interact with the dining brands they love? Zooming in on college town venues that cater specifically to the student crowd can shed light on the unique eating-out behaviors of this demographic. 

Lingering Over a Cup of Joe

Nationwide, the share of college students in coffee shops’ captured markets is just over the segment’s overall share in the population (+6%). But Starbucks locations near college campuses are positively teeming with students. A remarkable 81.9% of the captured market of the Starbucks near Indiana University, for example (on S. Indiana Ave in Bloomington, IN), belonged to STI:Landscape’s “Collegian” segment in 2024 – 5386% above the national average. Similar patterns were observed at locations near Texas A&M University and Penn State, where the segment made up 70.3% and 61.3%, respectively, of the locations’ visitor bases. 

And these students tended to linger far longer than visitors to other Starbucks locations, either to study or hang out with friends – between 28.0 and 34.0 minutes on average, compared to 14.1 minutes for the chain as a whole.

Snack Attack 101

Students also crave quick bites to power them through late-night study marathons and parties. Although most Taco Bells are busiest in the afternoons and early evenings, the one on S. Providence Rd. in Columbia, MO (near Mizzou) – with 68.5% of its market composed of “Collegians” – saw nearly half of visits take place after 8:00 PM last year. The same pattern held true at Taco Bell sites near the University of Florida in Gainesville and Texas A&M in College Station. 

Enjoying Summer Vacay

Collegian consumer activity typically peaks in August, when back-to-school shopping surges. And this holds true for college town restaurants as well. In 2024, visits to Chili’s locations serving college students – such as the Texas Ave S. location in College Station, TX, where the “Collegian” segment comprises 57.8% of its market – saw a notable visit spike in August. But in December, Chili's busiest month nationwide, things slowed down considerably at the analyzed campus-adjacent locations, as students headed back home for the holidays. 

Final Bites

From hearty fast-casual fare to specialty drinks, late-night burritos, and lengthy coffee shop study sessions, college students blend cost-consciousness with a desire for quality and experience. And their loyalty to brands that strike this balance – while catering to their unique preferences and behaviors – can be massive, especially once they leave campus and their spending power grows.

With Q1 2025 in full swing, we dove into the data to see how Darden Restaurants, Inc. – the force behind Olive Garden, LongHorn Steakhouse, and eight additional brands – fared throughout 2024 and how things are shaping up at the start of 2025.

Yearly YoY Visit Growth in a Challenging Environment

During the three month period ending November 24th, 2024, Darden reported a 2.4% year-over-year (YoY) increase in same-restaurant sales, even as consumers continued trading down and cutting back on discretionary spending. And though Darden hasn’t been immune to the headwinds affecting the full-service restaurant sector – its overall foot traffic dipped 1.7% in Q4 2024 – the company still closed out the year with a 1.0% increase in visits compared to 2023. 

LongHorn Steakhouse leads the way

With more than 900 locations nationwide, Olive Garden is Darden’s biggest brand by far. And a look at recent monthly visitation trends shows that despite challenges, the chain held its own in 2024. On a yearly basis, visits to Olive Garden remained essentially flat in 2024 (-0.3% YoY). And several months saw positive visit growth – likely bolstered by the chain’s popular Never Ending Pasta Bowl promotion, which ran from August 26th (a week earlier for club members) to November 17th. (The chain’s October YoY visit dip may reflect a different promotional schedule in 2023, when the offer began in mid- or late-September, driving heightened demand in October.)

But Darden’s most consistent growth driver over the past several months has been LongHorn Steakhouse. The casual dining steakhouse posted a 4.4% YoY visit increase in 2024, with six of the past eight months showing positive growth. And though February 2025 saw a minor weather- and calendar-driven dip, a strong rebound during the week of February 24th suggests continued momentum.

Taking a broader look at LongHorn Steakhouse’s trajectory reveals just how consistently the chain has outperformed. Since Q1 2023, LongHorn has posted steady YoY quarterly visit gains, each quarter building on the momentum of the last. Affordable, high-quality steaks continue to resonate especially well with today’s consumers, as they seek to stretch their dining dollars to the max.

Looking Ahead

All things considered, Darden has proven remarkably resilient in a dining landscape marked by cautious consumer spending. As 2025 unfolds, expect the company’s dual emphasis on iconic promotions at Olive Garden and consistent value-driven steak offerings at LongHorn to remain key to its continued success. And if current trends hold, Darden is poised to further solidify its standing as one of the industry’s top full-service dining operators.

The Placer 100 Index for Retail & Dining is a curated, dynamic list of leading chains operating across the United States. It includes chains from a variety of industries, such as superstores, grocery, dollar stores, apparel, full-service dining, QSR, and more. 

Leap Year Traffic Drop

In February 2025, foot traffic to the Placer 100 Index for Retail & Dining declined by 4.7% year over year (YoY), marking the steepest drop in the past twelve months. And although the comparison to a 29-day February in 2024 drove most of the dip, other factors also contributed to the negative trend. Shaky consumer confidence may have caused some consumers to cut down on shopping and dining out. And the severe winter storms and polar vortex that impacted much of the United States last month likely contributed significantly to the decline, especially given the comparison to an unusually mild February 2024.

Foot Traffic Mirrors Regional Weather Patterns

An analysis of February 2025 foot traffic trends across the continental United States highlights the likely impact of last month’s extreme weather on retail and dining visitation patterns. While February 2025 was slightly warmer than average nationwide, temperature fluctuations varied significantly by region. Parts of the Southwest and Southeast experienced unusually high temperatures, whereas the Midwest, Central, and Northeast regions faced successive snow storms and sharp temperature drops. These regions also experienced the steepest foot traffic declines, with Kansas seeing the largest drop (-9.0%). By contrast, states with milder climates – such as New Mexico, California, Arizona, and Florida – experienced more modest decreases in visits, though they were still affected by February 2025’s shorter calendar.

Chili’s Holds Onto Top Spot

Still, even amidst the inclement weather, some chains bucked the trend, enjoying YoY visit boosts last month. Chili’s Grill & Bar maintained its top position for both total visits and average visits per location, continuing the winning streak it sparked with its enhanced 3 For Me value meal in late April 2024. Barnes & Noble also did well, as did value-oriented top performers like Crunch Fitness, Aldi, Trader Joe’s, Five Below, and Ollie’s Bargain Outlet. CVS and LA Fitness also saw positive YoY average visit-per-location growth, highlighting the success of recent rightsizing moves. And several other chains, including California-based In-N-Out Burger, also emerged ahead of the pack.

Spotlight on Bath & Body Works… A Disney Collab!

Bath & Body Works was another major retailer to claim a top spot in February’s Placer 100 Index, with both overall visits (+8.7%) and average visits per location (+6.6%) elevated YoY – bolstered in part by a wildly successful Disney collaboration that clearly resonated.

On February 16th, 2024, the body care and fragrances retailer launched a line of Disney Princess-inspired fragrances, available both in-store and online. Enthusiastic fans of Cinderella, Tiana, Ariel, Belle, Moana, and Jasmine flocked to the chain, resulting in a remarkable 69.3% increase in visits on the launch day compared to an average year-to-date Sunday. And traffic remained elevated on the following Sunday as well (+10.0%), underscoring the power of a well-chosen collab to overcome headwinds and draw crowds.

Plenty of Reason for Optimism

The February 2025 Placer 100 Index highlights how severe winter weather can significantly impact foot traffic, with the hardest-hit regions experiencing the steepest declines. But the performance of chains like Chili's and Bath & Body Works shows the power of strategic  initiatives, such as value deals and compelling collaborations, to maintain strong visit numbers in the face of challenges. What lies ahead for retail and dining in the rest of 2025?

Walmart’s recent acquisition of the Pittsburgh, PA-area Monroeville Mall signals a new chapter for the retail giant, creating opportunities for both Walmart and the mall itself. Why did Walmart choose this particular property, what makes it such an appealing prospect – and what might the company do with the space? 

We dove into the data to find out.

A Different Kind of Consumer

Unsurprisingly, shoppers also interact differently with malls – including the Monroeville Mall purchased by Walmart – than they do with Walmart. In 2024, for example, 39.4% of indoor mall visits nationwide took place on weekends, compared to just 33.6% for Walmart. Mall shoppers were also more likely to travel further for their visits and stay longer, partly due to the entertainment and dining options malls typically offer. (Monroeville Mall, for instance, is home to a Cinemark movie theater). By moving into the mall space, Walmart stands to reach a new kind of shopper, both demographically and behaviorally.

A Perfect Fit

Why did Walmart choose to begin its foray into malls with the Monroeville Mall? Foot traffic data points to a unique balance here: The Monroeville Mall audience is different enough to expand Walmart’s reach, yet still similar in ways that could make it easier to convert new shoppers.

Analyzing Walmart’s trade areas with demographic data from STI: PopStats, for example, reveals that, on average, indoor mall shoppers tend to be more affluent than Walmart shoppers. In 2024, the median household income (HHI) of Walmart’s captured market was $64.5K – noticeably below the indoor mall median of $88.5K. But Monroeville Mall’s captured market had a median HHI of $62.8K – slightly below that of local Walmarts in the Pittsburgh, PA CBSA. Monroeville shoppers were also more likely to visit Walmart than shoppers at other malls, suggesting a natural overlap between the two visitor bases.

At the same time, Monroeville Mall offers Walmart access to new audience segments. In 2024, Monroeville Mall’s captured market showed significantly higher proportions of “Singles and Starters” and “Suburban Style” visitors (the latter encompassing middle-aged, suburban families with upscale incomes). Meanwhile, its share of the older “Autumn Years” segment – though still high – was smaller than that of Walmart’s base, highlighting the opportunity to engage a wider range of demographics.

Monroeville Mall’s Fitness Potential

Walmart has yet to announce specific plans for its new acquisition – though some have speculated that its partnership with Cypress Equities to “reimagine” the space signals a mix of retail, entertainment, and other amenities. Location analytics hint at several potential directions Walmart might pursue.

As consumers have changed their shopping habits, many malls have doubled down on experiential offerings – including on-site gyms, which deliver regular, repeat visits. And location analytics show that adding a fitness club to the Monroeville property may be especially beneficial for Walmart. Over the past year, Monroeville visitors were more likely to visit leading gym chains like Planet Fitness, Anytime Fitness, and LA Fitness compared to the average mall-goer nationwide. 

Successful Tenants Show the Way

And examining some of Monroeville Mall’s successful tenants highlights additional potential  strategies for Walmart. Malls have faced considerable headwinds in recent years, and the downturn appears to have impacted the Monroeville Mall as well, with overall foot traffic dipping somewhat year over year (YoY) in 2024. But some tenants – including Barnes & Noble and Harbor Freight Tools – saw YoY visit upticks. 

Visits to entertainment-focused offerings also increased, with the complex’s Full Throttle Adrenaline Park logging a 6.1% YoY foot traffic boost. And taking a broader look at the consumer habits of Monroeville visitors reveals an affinity for eatertainment: In 2024, 14.3% of Monroeville Mall-goers frequented a Dave & Busters, compared to just 7.4% for indoor mall visitors nationwide.

Opportunity Ahead

While Walmart’s ultimate intentions for Monroeville Mall remain under wraps, location analytics reveal a world of possibilities. And as retail continues to shift, Monroeville Mall may stand as a powerful case study of how a traditional big-box brand can successfully bridge into the mall space, capturing new audiences and invigorating a retail property ready for reinvention.

Dining in University City, Philadelphia: A Collegiate Vibe

College students often have to count their pennies – but they also know how to have a good time and are willing to pony up for things that matter to them. So with spring semester underway, we dove into the data to explore collegiate dining habits in the University City district of Philadelphia, PA – home to the University of Pennsylvania and Drexel University, as well as several smaller schools. How does the campus vibe impact visitation trends at local convenience stores and restaurants? 

We dove into the data to find out. 

Late-Night Hoagie Runs

Wawa – famous for low prices and round-the-clock service – is the perfect place to grab a sandwich to fuel an all-night study session or a cup of coffee on the go. And the University City Wawa at 3724-2744 Spruce Street is a local landmark, serving everyone from students and university employees to other area residents.

Analyzing visitation patterns at the Spruce Street Wawa shows that the store’s visitation patterns mirror the rhythms of campus life – with an uptick in late-night visits and fewer early-morning ones. Between September and December 2024, for example, some 8.7% of visits to the Spruce Street location took place between midnight and 3:00 AM – far exceeding the chainwide average of 3.8%. Meanwhile, visits during the early morning hours (6:00 AM to 9:00 AM) remained subdued – a trend consistent with the typical university lifestyle. And while the average Wawa’s traffic peaked during lunchtime, the Spruce Street location peaked between 3:00 PM and 6:00 PM – prime afternoon snack time. 

Examining the Spruce Street Wawa’s captured market – i.e. the census block groups (CBGs) feeding visits to the store, weighted to reflect the share of visits from each CBG – shows that it is indeed college students driving the location’s late-night activity. Between September and December 2024, 63.3% of the Spruce Street Wawa’s captured market during the 12:00 AM - 3:00 AM daypart was made up of STI:Landscape’s “Collegian” segment – a group encompassing currently-enrolled college students living in dorms or off campus. By 3:00 AM, this share dropped to 12.2%, before bottoming out at 10.1% between 6:00 AM and 9:00 AM – unthinkably early for many undergrads. The share of “Collegians” then began to climb back upwards, reaching just over 50.0% in the evening.

Yogurt on Weekdays, White Dog on Weekends

Of course, Wawa isn’t the only local dining spot to benefit from student patronage. Local favorites – from the full-service White Dog Cafe in University City to the quick-serve Kiwi Yogurt on Chestnut St. – also attract plenty of undergrads.

But while Kiwi Yogurt stands out as a key weekday attraction for busy students, White Dog Cafe is more of a weekend destination. On Mondays through Fridays, the share of “Collegians” in Kiwi Yogurt’s captured market stood at 36.4%, dropping to 22.6% on weekends. Meanwhile, White Dog Cafe experienced an opposite trend, with the share of “Collegians” increasing on weekends (36.7%) and declining during the week (24.5%). 

Looking Ahead

Whether it’s a late-night Wawa hoagie run or a weekend brunch at White Dog Cafe, even skint college students can find room in their budgets for convenient snacks and fun outings with friends – funneling steady foot traffic to local restaurants, cafes, and stores.
